'Solar' is my second album of original music. It is almost entirely acoustic, featuring violins, double bass, keys, percussion, vocals, and an amazing drum-track (Wild Wood) recorded by the masterful Richard Rayner (The 1975). It spans the end of the lockdown in 2020 up to the summer of 2022, where I mixed and mastered the final cuts. Folk/Jazz/Cinematic Fusion. Influences include Martin Hayes, Goat Rodeo, Brad Mehldau, Thomas Bartlett, The Vernon Spring, Kronos Quartet and Nick Drake. I made the album artwork using Solar Photo-paper. It is available to stream on all major platforms.
Tracklist: Melrose, On My Own, Old Friend, Oak, Sunrise, Friendly Creatures, Little Song, Wild Wood, Sky Islands |
This album was the result of two weeks non-stop recording at my parents' home in Penn, during the first lockdown. Most of the tunes started as an improvisation, especially some of the slower, more orchestral ones. I'd start with a single melodic line on the violin, let it run its course for about 2 minutes, and then, if I was happy I would start to harmonise the line. 'Written' while recording. There are also some voice notes on there - one, 'The Nearly Deads' is the most streamed song of the lot. Sometimes it doesn't really matter how you record things; we can fall in love with sounds of all shapes and textures, and sometimes 'rougher' has more personality.
